Die Tour beginnt am Rathaus in Metzingen. Von dort aus geht es entlang der Reutlinger Straße quer durch die Outlets aus der Stadt hinaus. Wegen der aktuellen Baustelle am neuen Knoten B28/B312 muss man einen kleinen Umweg fahren (Track ist nachbearbeitet), um weiter parallel zur B28 bis Reutlingen-Sondelfingen zu fahren. Dort biegt man auf einen Wirtschaftsweg ein, der über eine B28-Brücke weiter Richtung Innenstadt führt. Achtung! Bedingt durch den Bau des "Scheibengipfeltunnels" (Umfahrung Reutlingen B 312) ist dieser Weg derzeit - Stand 21.03.2010 - gesperrt und nicht befahrbar! Ausweichmöglichkeit s. Tour www.gps-tour.info/de/touren/detail.62074.html) Nach Erreichen der Bebauung von Reutlingen fährt man geradeaus ab, bis man vor einem aufgelassenem Bahnübergang links in die Panoramastraße einbiegt. Nun folgt man der alten Bahnlinie bis zum ehemaligen Südbahnhof (dort entsteht das zweite Portal des Scheibengipfeltunnels, evtl. muss man dort auch ausweichen). Nach Überqueren der B312 geht es auf der alten Bahntrasse über Pfullingen nach Lichtenstein-Unterhausen. Am Ende des Radwegs (ampelgeregelter Fußgängerüberweg über die B312) fahren wir rechts den Friedhofweg hoch, um gleich wieder in die Zeppelinstraße einzubiegen und über Goethestraße, Friedensweg und Haydnstraße die Oberhausener Steige zu erreichen, ohne die B312 nochmals überqueren oder nutzen zu müssen. Der Oberhausener Steige nach fahren wir über die Bergzeitfahrstrecke (www.stoppomat.de) des MTB-Club Pfullingen (www.mtb-pfullingen.de) an der Kalkofenhütte vorbei weiter nach rechts Richtung Nebelhöhle (der Zielpunkt der Bergzeitfahrstrecke liegt etwa 700m nach der Kalkofenhütte, also nicht zu früh freuen!). Am Waldrand wenden wir uns nach links, um nach Durchqueren des Wäldchens und kurzer Abfahrt die L 230 bei Genkingen zu überqueren. Wir halten uns nun an den Radweg nach Undingen, wobei wir etwa 500m vor dem Ortsanfang einen Blick ins "Große Rinnental" werfen können, das später noch eine Rolle spielt. In Undingen überqueren wir die L382 und fahren weiter auf dem Radweg Richtung Willmandingen. Kurz vor dem Ort sieht man zur Rechten Melchingen - kenntlich an den Windanlagen - liegen. Hier halten wir uns nach links, um nicht Willmandingen durchqueren zu müssen und erreichen so am Ortsrand den Gemeindeverbindungsweg nach Erpfingen. Wieder auf der Höhe streichen wir zunächst den Begriff "Albhochfläche" aus unserem Vokabular und fahren ab nach Erpfingen (Tipp: dort Mittagspause einplanen). Von der Ortsmitte aus wenden wir uns parallel zur L382 erst ein Stück Undingen zu, um an der Abzweigung der K6767 (Richtung Haidkapelle) den Wirtschaftsweg zu nehmen, der links von dieser abbiegt. Der Weg führt uns in den Wald ins Höhlental. Am Ende des Höhlentals treffen wir wieder auf das Große Rinnental und zusätzlich auf das Gamstal. Diese drei zusammenlaufenden Täler bilden ein Becken, das häufig einen regelrechten Kaltluftsee enthält. Dort steht die Wetterstation "Sonnenbühl" (wetterstationen.meteomedia.de/messnetz/eu_d.html) auf 735 m Höhe, die schon für manchen Minus-Temperaturen-Rekord nützlich war, was natürlich auch die Gemeinde Sonnenbühl touristisch ausschlachtet (www.sonnenbuehl.de/data/wetterring.php). Bei unserer Tour im August 2008 maß man dort gegen 13:00 Uhr 9°C, während in Erpfingen etwa 21°C herrschten... Also: raus aus der Kälte und nach rechts den Berg hoch, wobei es Meter um Meter wärmer wird. Der Radwegkennzeichnung folgend erreicht man am Sportgelände vorbei Großengstingen (www.engstingen.de). Man durchquert den Ort und fährt dann links von B313/312 auf einem Wirtschaftsweg bis zum Ampelübergang in Traifelberg. Nach Überqueren der B312 geht es auf der ehemaligen Zahnradbahntrasse mit konstant 10% Gefälle bergab nach Unterhausen, wo wir über die Bahnhofstraße wieder den Radweg erreichen, auf dem wir gekommen sind. Ab diesem Punkt fahren wir entgegen dem Hinweg zurück.
