Partendo dal Lago di Casette si costeggia il bacino con possibilità di visita alle sorgenti ed all'antica fornace. Ripresa la s.p. per Valle Castellana, dopo un'incursione nel borgo medievale di Castel Trosino, si imbocca una ripida frangifuoco che, passando dal Colle della Luna e per la Costa Cerita arriva al rifugio Paci. Si riprende l'asfalto fiino a raggiungere la località di San Giacomo che segna il confine tra le provincie di Teramo ed Ascoli. Seguendo l'indicazione per la Costa del Prevosto percorriamo una lunga brecciata panoramica che termina a quota 1400m circa in una zona denominata "Tre Caciare" proprio per la presenza di queste tipiche costruzioni. La caciara è una capanna in pietra a secco costruita e fruita dai pastori degli Appennini dell'Italia centrale. Comunemente conosciuta come capanna a Tholos, in Abruzzo e nelle Marche prende il nome, appunto, di caciara. La struttura è costruita in pietra senza l'uso di malte leganti. La forma è semisferica o ogivale. La particolarità sta nel fatto che la costruzione ha la caratteristica dell’autosostegno, grazie alla sfericità della struttura che presenta, procedendo verso l’alto, cerchi concentrici sovrapposti con diametro lievemente decrescente, in modo che l’anello successivo è sostenuto da quello sottostante. Le caciare erano utilizzate dai pastori per il proprio ricovero e per eseguire, in luogo riparato la lavorazione e per il deposito temporaneo dei formaggi. Il termine caciara potrebbe derivare da “cacio” e quindi luogo dove si produce e si ricovera il formaggio. Altra ipotesi più recente è quella legata alla parola ”casale” usata dalle genti locali per indicare i capanni dove gli agricoltori ricoveravano gli attrezzi da lavoro da utilizzare per i terreni siti più in quota e quindi più difficili e più faticosi da raggiungere. Oltre 50 capanni sono attualmente ancora visibili e alcuni di questi presentano un buono stato di conservazione. La discesa verso Castel Trosino si presenta velocissima e panoramica nella prima parte, lenta e molto divertente nella seconda. Dopo aver tagliato i verdi prati che sovrastano San Giacomo si intercetta il famoso single track delle "cascatelle" il quale. molto "turbinosamente", riporta a Castel Trosino.

The caciare were used by shepherds to their hospitalization and to perform, in a sheltered place for working and for temporary storage of the cheeses. The term may derive from racket "cheese" and then the place where it is produced and is hospitalized cheese. Another more recent hypothesis is linked to the word "house" used by local people to refer to the huts where farmers would admit the working tools to be used for land sites in higher and therefore more difficult and laborious to achieve. Over 50 huts are still visible today, and some of them have a good state of preservation. The descent towards Castel Trosino looks fast and scenic in the first part, slow and very funny in the second. After cutting the green meadows that overlook St. James intercepts the famous single track of "waterfalls" which. very "whirling" reports in Castel Trosino.
