Sehr schöne Genussrunde von Jena aus über Golmsdorf, Thalbürgel, Eisenberg, Bad Klosterlausnitz, Hermsdorf und Stadtroda. Die Tour kann ebenso gut auch in der Gegenrichtung befahren werden, mir gefällt die Verteilung der Steigungen und Gefälle in der beschriebenen Richtung jedoch besser. Start ist an der Paradiesbrücke in Jena. Von dort folgt man zunächst dem identisch verlaufenden Saaleradweg über Wenigenjena vorbei am Erlkönigdenkmal nach Kunitz. In Golmsdorf verlässt der Mühlenradweg die Route des Saaleradweges und folgt dem Gleistal auf der stillgelegten und gut den Bedürfnissen der Radfahrer angepassten Bahntrasse des "Esels" Richtung Bürgel. Hinter Thalbürgel folgt die Route für eine ziemlich lange, aber mäßige Steigung dem Thüringenweg, um am Gipfelpunkt die Autobahn A9 zu überqueren. Von hier aus geht es in wechselnden Steigungs- und Gefällestrecken nach Eisenberg. Nach der Durchquerung Eisenbergs, im Moment ist eine Dauerbaustelle in der Nähe der ehemaligen Bahnlinie nach Hartmannsdorf in Betrieb und die Ausschilderung des Radweges nimmt darauf leider keine Rücksicht , nähert man sich auf dem gut asphaltierten Bahndamm dem Eingang des Eisenberger Mühltales. Während die Mühlen im Gleistal und den darauf folgenden Tälern noch eher sporadisch auftraten, macht der Mühlenradweg jetzt seinem Namen alle Ehre. Das Mühltal und der hinter Hermsdorf beginnende Zeitzgrund sind mit Mühlen zum Bersten gefüllt. Besonders das gut asphaltierte Mühltal wird entsprechend touristisch genutzt und stellt mit seinem Auto- und Kutschenverkehr sowie den zahlreichen Spaziergängern radtechnisch eher ein Hindernis dar. Hat man sich durchgekämpft und ist vielleicht auch an einer der Mühlen eingekehrt, so stellt der Rest des Weges keine große Herausforderung mehr dar. In schönen Schwüngen geht es durch den malerischen Zeitzgrund hauptsächlich bergab. Nach Erreichen Stadtrodas biegt man auf den Radweg entlang des Rodatales ein, der uns nach Jena zurückführt. Kurz vor dem Ende der Tour habe ich die einzige Abweichung von der Originalroutenführung des Thüringer Mühlenradweges vorgenommen. Die Originalroute verläuft über Maua entlang der B88, die mehrfach zu queren ist, sowie das Industriegebiet Göschwitz zurück an die Saale. Die geänderte Route nimmt den wahrscheinlich zukünftigen Verlauf des Saaleradweges über die Autobahnüberbauung der A4 bei Lobeda vorweg und ist verkehrstechnisch und landschaftlich wesentlich besser. Unterhalb von Lobeda trifft man an der Saalebrücke Göschwitz den Originalweg wieder und folgt ihm entlang des Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeldes und durch das Jenaer Paradies zum Ausgangpunkt der Tour.
