Trail Description

Railway Reserve Heritage TrailStart at Pechey Road in a small carpark on the edge of the John Forrest National Park. Many people start here because then you dont have to pay the National Park Entry Fee however John Forrest NP is worth the small fee as there is lots to see and good picnic facilities, toilets etc. There are many other alternative start points but from Pechey road if you head downhill first for a short distance you go under Great Eastern Hwy and then get all of the uphill section done first. Don't panic its not too steep as its all on the old railway formation so the grade is fairly slight. Its worth stopping somewhere for a cuppa - lots of choices but Mundaring Bakery is very good but can be busy. Sawyers Valley is eclectic as not only can you get a coffee but also pick up your sexy lingerie needs (see pics). The second half of the ride from about Chidlow is gently downhill, so you can cruise back to your car at Pechey Road. Some info from the Mundaring Shire Website is below. Also check out their new website for the trail Railway Reserves Heritage Trail where you can get a Brochure and MapThe Railway Reserves Heritage Trail retraces 70km of the old Eastern Railway constructed from Fremantle to York in the 1880's. Passing through the reserves you will discover the individual history and character of the many settlements which sprang up alongside the line. Each reserve has an information sign which describes the development of the adjoining settlement and includes historical and flora and fauna photographs. Most points along the trail are accessible by road. It is suitable for walking, cycling and horse riding and features the attractive scenery and flora and fauna of the Darling Range and John Forrest National Park. Many of the reserves are now community parks providing picnic tables, toilets and other facilities.
Stop for a cuppa along the way - Mundaring Bakery on Great Eastern Hwy is good but there are plenty of other choicesGo south first from Pechey Road and head uphill on the part of the trail south of Great Eastern HwyIf its hot carry plenty of water although there are many places to stop and buy a drink along the wayStop and check out the Mundaring Sculpture Park which is on the Trail and is also the start point for the Munda biddi TrailPaste this link into your browser for more info about the trail
