Nella zona di Valle Castellana esistono una miriade di piccoli sentieri, mulattiere e tratturi che intersecandosi tra loro formano un vero e proprio labirinto immerso nelle foreste. Dal dopoguerra in poi il progressivo spopolamento di queste zone ha lasciato segni ancora oggi evidenti di una civiltà che fu, di popolazioni dedite esclusivamente al duro lavoro nelle campagne, appezzamenti di terreno di cui oggi, inesorabilmente, la natura torna ad impossessarsi. Dalla piazza del comune di Valle Castellana si segue la strada provinciale che passa nella Valle Tevera. In corrispondenza del bivio per la frazione di Coronelle giriamo a sx e dopo un tratto di asfalto fino al paese prendiamo un’ampia strada brecciata. Superato il Colle di Coronelle si raggiunge un valico, incrociata la strada che sale da Rocca Santa Maria, svoltiamo a sx ed al bivio successivo ancora a sx fino ad arrivare al Monte Ciccone (quota 1268m). E’ il punto più alto della nostra escursione, virando verso una baracca di legno (denominata dai locali “baracche de’ pummador”) si seguono in discesa flebili tracce tenendosi sul margine sinistro del prato. Improvvisamente si notano dei calanchi che sprofondano verso il fosso di Vallepezzata. Ci buttiamo sulla sinistra iniziando a cavalcare il crinale del Monte Pacini. Un sentiero abbastanza evidente scende dalla cresta regalando buone trame oltre ai selvaggi panorami sulla Valle del Castellano. Scesi di quota, pressappoco sui 1050m la traccia di cresta si perde mentre iniziano le difficoltà. L’originario sentiero di collegamento tra Colle Pacini ed il borgo fantasma di Vallepezzata, da informazioni assunte da boscaioli, pare sia richiuso quasi completamente da diversi decenni. Nonostante ciò una moltitudine di tracce animali calano verso il fossato, alcune più marcate forse perchè percorse da bracconieri piuttosto che da cercatori di funghi. Potrebbe sembrare bizzarro consigliare di portarsi appresso un machete ma è quello che abbiamo fatto noi nell’intento di dare una prima sfoltita a questa giungla di ginestre e rovi cercando di rendere un tantino più umana la difficile discesa ai ruderi di Vallepezzata da Sole. Arrivati alla prima abitazione non bisogna fare l’errore di prendere a dx, l’evidente sentiero tra i cespugli prosegue per il paese di Stavigliano. Bisogna invece intercettare, poco sotto i nostri piedi, un esile sentiero che scende in un piccolo fosso a sinistra per poi girare verso destra. Ci si mantiene a mezza costa e sbuchiamo in prossimità di una vecchia casa frequentata da pastori. Finiscono le non poche difficoltà cedendo il passo ad un emozionante single track che taglia a mezza costa il Fosso di Vallepezzata ripagando ampiamente delle fatiche patite. Il sentiero prosegue alla base del fossato ma giunti sotto la piccola frazione di Mattere riprendiamo la strada “ordinaria” che in velocità ci riporta a Valle Castellana.

In the area of Valle Castellana, there are a myriad of small paths, mule tracks and cattle tracks that intersect they form a veritable labyrinth nestled in the forests. After the war on the progressive depopulation of these areas has left marks still evident today of a civilization that was, of people devoted exclusively to hard labor in the countryside, plots of land, of which today, surely, nature comes back to take possession. From the main square of the town of Valle Castellana follow the road that passes in the Valley Tevera. At the junction about Coronelle turn left and after a stretch of asphalt road to the village we take a wide brecciated. After crossing the Col de Coronelle you reach a crossing, cross the road that goes from Rocca Santa Maria, turn left at the next junction and left again until you reach the Monte Ciccone (altitude 1268m). And 'the highest point of our hike, veering towards a wooden shack (called by locals "cabins de' pummador") follow faint traces holding down the left edge of the lawn. Suddenly you notice ravines that plunge into the ditch Vallepezzata. We throw ourselves on the left starting to ride the crest of Mount Pacini. A path descends quite evident from the crest offering good plots in addition to the rugged landscape of the Valle del Castellano. I got to share, about 1050m on the ridge trail is lost when the difficulties begin. The original trail linking Colle Pacini and the ghost town of Vallepezzata, from information obtained from lumberjacks, seems to have almost completely closed for several decades. Despite this, a multitude of animal tracks fall into the ditch, some more pronounced, perhaps because traversed by poachers rather than by mushroom hunters. It might seem bizarre to advise you not to bring a machete but that's what we did in order to give a first thinned in this jungle of gorse and brambles trying to make a little more human the difficult descent to the ruins of Vallepezzata from the Sun. Arriving at first home do not make the mistake of taking on the right, the obvious path through the bushes continues to the village of Stavigliano. We must instead intercept, just beneath our feet, a thin trail that descends into a small ditch on the left then turn to the right. We keep you halfway and come out in the vicinity of an old house frequented by shepherds. They end the many difficulties giving way to an exciting single track that cuts halfway up the Fosso di Vallepezzata repaying widely hardships endured. The trail continues to the base of the ditch but came under small fraction of Mattere continue the way "ordinary" which brings us back to speed in Valle Castellana.
