Da Fonte Cerreto si percorre la Strada Statale della Funivia del Gran Sasso (N.17 bis) in direzione di Campo Imperatore. Dopo un iniziale tratto all’ombra dei boschi, passando per Monte Rotondo e Vallaggueri, si esce su immensi prati aperti continuando la lunga e dolce ascesa sino al bivio per la Fossa di Paganica. Il nostro viaggio si dispiega in morbidi e lussureggianti valloni che ancora recano le tracce dell’antica pastorizia, in uno spazio suggestivo e quasi poetico, che ha meritato il soprannome di Piccolo Tibet. Dall’alto della Fossa di Paganica, svoltiamo a sx ed al secondo tornante deviamo a dx per un’evidente traccia che interseca a fondo valle il sentiero n. 219. Percorsa l’intera vallata, mantenendoci sulla dx, sbuchiamo in corrispondenza del bivio per Campo Imperatore. Da questo punto fino al piazzale dell’osservatorio non resta che spingere su bitume e raggiungere quota 2100m circa. Eccoci all’Hotel Campo Imperatore: realizzato negli anni trenta, è famoso per essere stato, tra il 28 agosto ed il 12 settembre 1943, la prigione di Benito Mussolini sino alla sua liberazione avvenuta ad opera delle forze armate tedesche. Aggirando l’albergo, iniziamo a scendere. Occorre adesso fare la seguente importante precisazione: il sentiero “ordinario” per raggiungere l’imbocco superiore di Vallefredda è senza ombra di dubbio il n.200 C.A.I. pertanto, per chi volesse optare per questa più saggia scelta, basta che si mantenga sulla traccia principale pedalando a mezza costa a quota 2100/2000 m circa fino a quando, giunto alle pendici di Monte Cristo, trova agevolmente la traccia n.216 che scende a Fonte Cerreto. Noi invece abbiamo imprudentemente optato per una sorta di traccia fantasma che costringe a passaggi ciclo alpinistici e che si sconsiglia vivamente a bikers inesperti, allergici alla bici in spalla ed ai pendii fortemente scoscesi. Passando dalla Fonte Scontrone il sentiero resta evidente per un po’ quasi scomparendo in corrispondenza di alcuni ruderi. Si è costretti ad attraversare le Chiuse ed il fosso dell’Acqua della Formica avendo come riferimento solo ed esclusivamente qualche impronta lasciata da bestiame al pascolo. Lo snervante camminamento, a tratti difficile da percorrere persino a piedi, giunge sopra l’inizio del bosco di Valle Fredda. Incominciamo a scendere vertiginosamente sino ad incrociare il sentiero n. 216 che senza particolari difficoltà taglia Valle Fredda e scivola a Fonte Cerreto.

Da Fonte Cerreto go along the main road of the cable car of Gran Sasso (Ranked # 17 bis) in the direction of Campo Imperatore. After an initial stretch in the shade of the woods, through Monte Rotondo and Vallaggueri, you go out to huge open meadows continuing the long and gentle ascent until the exit to the pit Paganica. Our journey unfolds in soft and lush valleys that still bear the traces of herding, in a space evocative and almost poetic, that has earned the nickname of Little Tibet. From the top of the pit Paganica, turn left at the second bend and deviate to the right for an obvious trail that intersects in the valley the path n. 219 Going down the entire valley, keeping us on the right, we emerge at the junction for Campo Imperatore. From this point to the square of the observatory you just have to push on bitumen and reach about 2100m.
