Trail Description

Spring in February?Monday February 22ndAfter the 48 hour ARRL CW contest (20+21 Feb) I had the next Monday off and decided to finally take the MTB out for a ride after 3 weeks of other engagements during the weekends. The thermometer was showing an incredible 14C. This time I wanted to visit three nearby panorama points that show a nice view of the surrounding area.1st panorama pointThe first panorama point was just between Simpelveld and Benzenrade. See also the photo's on the map. From that point you have a clear view over Heerlen and parts of Brunssum. Luckily the sun even showed herself ... contributing to a very nice view! Because of all the snow that had melted over the past days  the tractor road to the panorama point was extremely muddy which made it impossible to stay on the bike :-(. After reaching the normal roads the bike was certainly 2-3 kilo's heavier from all the mud...VrouwenheideGoing from Simpelveld towards the 2nd panorama point I decide to take a parallel road. At the roundabout in Huls I turned left and at the first junction right. That road would bring me past the well known mill in Vrouwenheide. There is no other hill in the Netherlands located at  a higher altitude; > 200mtr above sea level. It can be seen from almost all surroundings. It was build in 1857.2nd panorama pointAfter Vrouwenheide I went to Trintelen and from there towards Eyserheide, but took a right turn towards the Vrakelbergweg. Here I must have reached the top speed of this tour. Just outside Ubachsberg there is a dirt road that leads to another panorama point. Sadly the weather was turning for the worse. Dark clouths were approaching fast. The view wasn't less though. In one of the pictures you can see the big tower of the energy plant in Maasbracht (~ 30km straight line). In another the remains of a cool mine in Belgium can be seen in the form of an artificial (black) hill.3rd panorama pointSince the weather was turning bad I decided not to visit the 3rd view point, near the big communications tower in Eyserheide... I drove home from the 2nd panoramo point and arrived there just before the rain started, ufff... I hate riding in the rain.Trip statisticsTrip distance: 26.8 kmMoving Time: 1h24mStop time: 15m10sMax Speed: 58.7 km/hAve moving speed: 19.1 km/h
