Trail Description

General Winter returns occasionally to disturb our dreams ambientati on the high peaks of the mountains. Back, with its icy wind, to cover tracks and bridleways of the thin layer of snow which we are now more than saturated. Then the best response of a biker can only be to bring out the winter uniform just placed in the wardrobe and ride as high as possible almost to defy the backlash of General Winter. Today, in the company of the Boar are Matthew and newcomer Fabio Di Emidio. We decided to go up to the mountain pass of Stone Close and face the "Dedicated trials" Fosso Grande. To do this, savoring full this side of the Monti della Laga, it was decided to carry out the recovery drive by placing in a fraction of a Ioanella and the Cross Campli. From the town of Ioanella, at the church, we go right up the steep road on the hill Sansonesco. Once there, the view opens on the Cross and the valley where the stream flows Rimaiano. We continue the ascent now becomes sweeter and drive along the Mount of Three Crosses. Looking downstream, on our right you can see the various tracks that go down. These form an intricate maze of trails that link almost all over the valley of the river Vezzola. The road runs along a couple of ditches before entering a pine forest. We arrive in town Acquachiara leaving the hut on the right of the Eagles. We take the cart to the left which climbs first near a herd of wild boars showing us the spectacle of view on the chain of Gran Sasso. Then he goes on, crossing a grassy plateau overlooking the Fosso Grande with adjoining Mountain Campli. The view is superb especially this morning that you can see a snow-capped mountain just by the appearances of stuffed sweet with powdered sugar. We continue uphill but things start to get complicated because, penetrating into the woods, the snow fall in the night struggling to melt sunlight. Luckily, the providential passage of an SUV, it makes the climb less tiring allowing for a better grip. We leave to the left the path down from the Mount of Three Crosses in the woods and we continue to ignore until another track on the right. The latter leads to an old hut and proceed towards the Fosso Sant'Angelo. The cart comes out of the shady forest, crosses what's left of the road to Poggio Valley and continue uphill along the mountain ridge culminating in Stone Close. The stretch is very impressive as the view is from the Gran Sasso Laga and Teramo to the Twin Mountains. Higher up, on the left at the bottom you can see the abandoned village of Valle Piola dominated by the Monte della Farina. One last effort and we arrive at the crossing of Stone Close. We are preparing to drop that today is not at all simple. Already perceived as the Fosso Grande is not that it is a track for bikers first coat but, in particular, today we are shown in white robe. Snow falling on the single track is a constant danger. So there is bread in our teeth. They know something Emidio and Matthew. The first, after some uncertainty, "exploded" under the Leaps of Castiglione ... the second, with the strength of desperation, he slips on the single track riding a front. I can honestly say that cross the Fosso Grande in "Lapland" is a true adventure worthy of being lived. Of course you have to be lucky by taking advantage of the lack of fresh snow just fall from the sky because, usually, in this place the snow accumulates abundant and persists for a very long time making the ditch impractical. I got out in front of the rocky walls of the Monticchio Campli we shoot at full speed down the path 16 of the mythical CAI putting a strain on the brakes and balance. The return to the car "relay race" runs along a cart track as fast comes naturally to me looking back towards the Fosso Grande. Check to think that the original excursion today was a gift from the General Winter, himself, hated, feared that perhaps today he wanted to shew gratitude for our tenacity.
