E' un itinerario molto panoramico, con bellissima vista verso Bolzano e le Dolomiti. Si può anche fare tutto pedalato, ma noi per comodità saliamo con la funicolare fino al passo Mendola. Da qui si sale al monte Penegal con splendida vista. Coninuiamo sul sentiero 500 nel bosco prima in discesa poi in leggera salita e vicino ad una piccola baita nel prato deviamo a dx sul sentiero 545 in ripida discesa, poi sul 536. Alla fine del sentiero prendiamo la forestale 8b a sx e dopo l'albergo Steinegger scendiamo verso le famose buche di ghiaccio, un fenomeno naturale dove è sempre fresco anche d'estate. Questo tratto è un pò sconnesso e costringe a spingere la bici. Dopo un tratto in asfalto seguiamo il 15a fino alla funicolare Autostrada del brennero uscita Ora, direzione Caldaro, seguire per funicolare Mendola in località S. Antonio, parcheggio davanti alla partenza
