L’itinerario inizia e termina nello splendido scenario formato dalle rovine dell’Abbazia di San Galgano e dalla Cappella di Montesiepi, al cui interno è conservata la mitica “Spada nella Roccia” (per maggiori informazioni:).
Per strade di bosco e di campo ci si dirige verso l’abitato di Palazzetto. Si inizia quindi a salire in direzione di Chiusdino, per poi ridiscendere sulla SS441 che ci limitiamo ad attraversare nei pressi del Mulino delle Pile, conosciuto anni addietro per uno spot pubblicitario di un noto marchio di dolciumi. Da qui si percorrono pochi km su sterrata, prima di imboccare sulla dx una lunga salita in mezzo al bosco che ci condurrà alla sommità del Poggio Fogari, dove le energie spese saranno ampiamente ripagate da un panorama davvero mozzafiato. Si riprende in discesa fin sotto al castello di Luriano e si prosegue andando ad imboccare un tratto dell’Antica Strada Maremmana, che ci riporterà al punto di partenza.
Avvertenza: nel ripercorrere l’itinerario in data 19 agosto 2012, ho avuto l’amara sorpresa di trovare divelta la passerella che consentiva di attraversare il Merse in prossimità della Cappella di Montesiepi. Non ci son state difficoltà di sorta a guadare comunque il fiume, in quanto di questi tempi la portata d’acqua è piuttosto scarsa. In altri periodi dell’anno consiglio di contattare la Pro Loco di Monticiano per informarsi se il passaggio è stato ripristinato. Si parte dal parcheggio del Wine Bar Salendo, a pochi metri dalla Cappella di Montesiepi (Chiusdino - SI).
The route begins and ends in the beautiful scenery formed by the ruins of the Abbey of San Galgano and the Chapel of Montesiepi, in which is preserved the legendary "Sword in the Stone" (for more details :).
For forest roads and field head towards the village of Arena. It then starts to climb towards Chiusdino, before falling back on the SS441 that we limit ourselves to cross near Mulino delle Pile, known years ago for an advertisement of a well-known brand of candy. From here you walk a few miles of dirt road on the right before a long climb through the woods that will lead us to the summit of Poggio Fogari, where the energy spent will be amply rewarded by a spectacular landscape. Shooting down just below the castle of Luriano and continue going to take a stretch of the Old Road Maremma, which will bring us back to the starting point.
Warning: In retrace the route on August 19, 2012 I had the bitter surprise of finding ripped off the walkway that allowed to cross the Merse in the vicinity of the Chapel of Montesiepi. There are difficulties were kind to wade the river, however, because these days the water flow is quite poor. At other times of the year advice to contact the Pro Loco of Monticiano to inquire if the passage has been restored. It starts from the parking lot of the Wine Bar Going up, a few meters from the Chapel of Montesiepi (Chiusdino - SI).
