L'escursione, pur compiendosi interamente in terra austriaca, interessa una zona molto prossima al confine con l'Italia. Si tratta di un itinerario tra i più suggestivi tra quelli provati in Austria, sicuramente il più bello per i panorami offerti. Infatti, la Strada alpina del Großglockner fa parte dei percorsi da sogno di molti appassionati della bici da corsa e della mountain bike. Il percorso proposto, privo di difficoltà tecniche tranne che per la discesa (variante), si conclude con una vista spettacolare sul monte Großglockner e sul ghiacciao Pasterze. La tappa da Heiligenblut (1.301 m) fino alla Quota Imperatore-Francesco-Giuseppe (2.369 m) registra 1.068 metri di dislivello lungo un percorso totale di 16 chilometri. Il transito lungo la strada per i ciclisti è gratuito. La discesa si sviluppa lungo lo stesso itinerario. Per rendere la "tappa regina" ancora più all mountain prima di raggiungere la Kassa si può svoltare a destra (freccia con indicazione Heiligenblut). Si percorre inizialmente una strada sterrata che subito dopo si trasforma in un sentiero. Questa variante viene proposta non avendo trovato nessun divieto per le mtb.
In ultimo si consiglia di non scegliere giornate prossime ai fine settimana in quanto il traffico (moto in primis) potrebbero rovinarvi la gita.

The hike, while being fulfilled entirely in the Austrian land, affects an area very close to the border with Italy. It is a journey of the most striking among those tested in Austria, certainly the most beautiful for the views offered. In fact, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is part of the paths dream of many fans of racing bikes and mountain bikes. The proposed route, without technical difficulty except for the descent (variant), ends with a spectacular view of the mountain and Grossglockner glacier Pasterze. The stage from Heiligenblut (1,301 m) to the share-Emperor Francis-Joseph (2,369 m) record 1,068 vertical meters over a total distance of 16 kilometers. The transit along the road for cyclists is free. The descent is developed along the same route. To make the "queen stage" even more all mountain before reaching the Kassa you can turn right (arrow indicating Heiligenblut). Initially follow a dirt road immediately after it turns into a trail. This variant is proposed not having found no prohibition for mtb.
Finally it is advisable not choose next day at weekends because the traffic (bikes in the first place) could ruin your trip.
