Si narra che il nome Macera delle Morte si debba ad Annibale che pare passò di lì con i suoi elefanti alla volta di Canne, dove sconfisse le truppe romane di Gaio Terenzio Varrone nella famosa battaglia del 216 a.C. Si parte da Spelonga e si percorre una comoda strada fino al Passo il Chino, sotto le pendici del Monte Comunitore. Da lì inizia il sentiero che prima attraversa la bella faggeta del Cugnolo e poi, lungo la ripida Costa Piangrano tra la Valle della Corte a sinistra e la Valle del Chiarino a destra, arriva alla Macera della Morte. Poco sotto la vetta è posto il Termine, cippo confinario tra Marche, Lazio ed Abruzzo a 2022 m., una volta confine tra lo Stato Pontificio ed il Regno delle Due Sicilie. In single track si va in direzione Monte Pizzitello, attraversando la sommità della Valle del Chiarino, fino al Monte Le Vene da dove inizia la panoramica discesa verso il Rifugio Inversaturo, lungo la Costa Pisciarelli. Con un tortuoso sentiero, prima su prato poi su ripida faggeta, si scende nella Valle Malpasso per il Lago Secco, piccolo laghetto di origine morenica, oasi del WWF. La discesa continua per la zona dell’Agro Nero, lungo il Fosso della Valle in Su’, per un sentiero sporco e poco evidente (attenzione alla traccia gps) fino a Poggio d’Api da dove, ormai su asfalto, si ritorna a Spelonga.
