Trail Description

Assisi and Mount Subasio. The tour can be considered a classic in the area, very scenic and combines the beauty of the picturesque views of Mount Subasio in Assisi. The departure is from Piazza Santa Chiara in Assisi and walk after a short stretch of asphalt, a dirt road halfway towards Spello. This first section allows a first striking view of the valley south of Mount Subasio to his left, leaving the woods and olive groves to the right. After about five miles the road begins to climb in Maiera more decisive, even with slopes over 20% (short distances) and enter the forest. This is the most difficult stretch that will take you down the road "overview" of the Subasio and from this to the little chapel "Madonna of stripping" from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the distant Sibillini and the valley of the river Mouse (east) . The tour continue on the "Overview" to the first bend where you leave the main road and cross the meadows on the south side of the single track perhaps the most beautiful and famous of Subasio. From here it is back on the slope above Assisi (west) and the panorama of Assisi is breathtaking. Arrived at the plateau "Stazzi" take the road "overview" of the Subasio for a short distance and direction back Armenzano (without, however, get there) along a track on the north slope of Mount Subasio and thus fall back into the woods. Here the view is the same woods, it is the north slope of Mount Subasio wilder and perhaps even more spectacular. After a short descent takes a new track which, with ups and downs continue, will bring you back to Assisi. The last stretch is characterized by a steep descent to the "Rocchicciola" or "Rocca Minore", is not difficult but very steep descent, eye punctures and pinch flats (see photo!) And finally in Assisi. The final part covers the lanes (single track, ladders and other) of Assisi through the Rocca Maggiore and then up to being in front of the Basilica of St. Francis, St. Peter, and finally return with a brief but intense climb Square S.Chiara.
The tour is open year-round (except of course when the Subasio is white with snow), it is very exposed to the wind. The best time is definitely autumn. Unfortunately, the ride is stingy with water, there are virtually no supply points percu is good to do good supply at the start especially in the summer.
