Am 17.08.2008 stand die nunmehr 9. Auflage des Mountainbikeklassikers „Rund um Zierenberg“ auf dem Programm. Im Zuge dessen galt es den Bärenberg zu bezwingen, der gleich im ersten Viertel des Rennens mit saftigem Anstieg gemeistert werden sollte. Mit einer Höhe von 599m ist der Bärenberg nur unwesentlich niedriger als das Hohe Gras im Habichtswald, vielleicht jedoch dem ein oder anderen bekannt wenn er die Autobahn A44 von oder in Richtung Dortmund fährt. Auf der Westseite der Autobahn (in Richtung Dortmund links der A44) erkennt man auf dem Berg einen ausragenden Gitterfunkmast auf dem sich eine uns bis dahin unbekannte Aussichtsplattform befindet. Da der Otto-Normalbiker im Rennen am Bärenbergturm dank des Anstiegs mit einem Pulsschlag kurz vor Drehzahlgrenze ankommt und hier oben sogleich umschalten muss auf Topspeed- Abfahrt, die dank des groben Schotters seine volle Konzentration abverlangt, kann dieser nur aus dem Augenwinkel heraus erahnen, dass es sich hier oben um ein lohnenswertes Ausflugsziel handelt. Wir haben nun diesen Grund zum Anlass genommen, den Bärenberg als Ziel einer MTB-Tour auszuwählen und von Kassel aus in Angriff genommen. Die Rundum- und Fernsicht von der Aussichtsplattform ist einfach grandios und nur durch den Horizont oder schlechte Wetterverhältnisse begrenzt. Allenfalls der Aufstieg zur Plattform könnte dem unter Akrophobie leidenden, Schwierigkeiten bereiten. Mir zumindest war nicht ganz wohl beim Aufstieg, die Neugier auf die tolle Aussicht war jedoch größer als die Höhenangst. Der Rückweg führt nach der Zierenbergdurchquerung am Fuße des Dörnberg entlang bis zum Gasthaus Ahnatal. Die Befüllung der Kohlenhydratspeicher in Form von (alkoholfreiem) Weizenbier erfolgt dann im Gasthaus Erlenloch, das auf der Rückfahrt durch den Habichtswald unmittelbar neben unserer Route liegt. Einkehrmöglichkeiten: Diverse lokale in Zierenberg und Habichtswald-Ehlen, Bergcafe am Friedrichstein, Gasthaus Ahnatal, Gasthaus Erlenloch.
