Trail Description

Percorso realizzato su piste ciclabili e strade secondarie a scarso traffico veicolare.

Path made of bicycle paths and secondary roads in poor traffic.
Trails also two short dirt roads around Palmanova.
Strassoldo fraction of Cervignano del Friuli, is a rare example of a medieval village, extremely well-preserved and rare charm. The first photo is the entrance to the village.
Hypotheses about the origin of the name is different, can be traced back to Latin (extra solidum) or by referring to the Germanic origin of the family who probably Lombard had jurisdiction as far back as the Middle Ages and indicates the locations with the German Strasse (street) with various assumptions for the ending -oldo.
The name appears for the first time on documents Friuli 1190 which speaks of such a Bernardus of Straso. The historic seventeenth-century Palladio takes a legend that goes back to the origins of Raimbaut Strassau, who lived in the fifth century who fought against Attila. But the source is not certain and it is, more likely, an attempt to reconstruct a posteriori of noble origins, typical of all aristocratic families.
Until the first decade of the sixteenth century, the family of the village of the same name Strassoldo was very rich and powerful, the Counts had jurisdiction over many areas of Friuli and Carinthia with the right of life and death over his subjects.
During the wars of the League of Cambrai (1509 - 1512), the castle, occupied by the Venetians, was conquered by the 'federated' invading the Veneto.
Following these events, the family dispersed, but not entirely abandon the Friulian residence, so much so that he was able to get decently important people and prestigious delegations as documented historically.
In particular, it offered the Hapsburgs of Austria a long series of important officials and generals, among which stand out in importance: Giulio di Sotto Strassoldo long Austrian governor of Lombardy; three brothers Franziska Romana Strassoldo-Grafenberg wife of Field Marshal Radetzky (they were married in the village), Michael who was Governor of Lombardy under Radetzky, then Styria, Director intimate and imperial Austrian Chamberlain, Julius, commander of the Brigade during the First Strassoldo War of Independence; Field Marshal Kuhn fierce opponent of Garibaldi Bezzecca.
the monumental complex appears nowadays as a rehash century, splitting the Castle and the Castle di Sopra Sotto, still leaving a glimpse of the shape of the manor used as a means of defense and offense as if the documents had to be pointed him out as "The Castle of the Twin Towers" of which still remains in memory a print of the eighteenth century.
Strassoldo: Castle Under: Access through a high gate towered Cisis the door that opens onto the outer circle of the walls told the group that opens in a tree surrounded by houses of the sixteenth century. Under the Castle of the complex of buildings are arranged around an inner courtyard. The main building in a rectangular shape is the so-called "tower", the origin of which is uncertain but which underwent several alterations in the fourteenth century, in the seventeenth century, and finally in the eighteenth century when the eastern facade was modified in such a way as to give the castle a bit ' the appearance of the Venetian villa.
Strassoldo: Castle Above: It is accessed by passing a second bridge. The origins of this complex are supposed to be parallel to the Castello di Sotto as they are part of a single mighty fortified together. Like the other manor suffered the same fate, destroyed on two occasions by the feds of the League of Cambrai. A plaque on the building that housed the Chancery, formerly archive of all lower Friuli, recalls the event and the reconstructions carried out in 1749 among the various structures that make up a mighty tower stands 18 meters high, the only survivor Two of which were originally equipped with the medieval complex.
PALMANOVA is the masterpiece of military architecture of Venice, a city designed and built a fortress to defend the borders of the region from foreign threats, especially the Turks. It is a model of a city unique in its kind, in the form of a nine-pointed star is perfectly symmetrical, with a central square. The historic center of Palmanova is achieved through three doors Monumental, called Aquileia, Udine and Cividale and from whatever direction you reach the point of outlet is the Piazza Grande, the old parade ground. Its shape is a perfect hexagon overlooked by elegant and important buildings, including the Cathedral (see photo), caretaker of works of considerable interest, and the Civic Historical Museum, which houses weapons, relics and documents illustrating the history the city-fortress from birth to the Second World War. At the center of the square stands a stone base, Istria, from which rises the highest standard, from time immemorial, a witness to the historical events of the fortress and symbol of the fortress itself.
The second weekend of July Palmanova is animated by a suggestive historical re-enactment: more than two hundred people in costume reminiscent of the seventeenth century when it was the first time raised the banner of the Most Serene Republic of Venice in the center of the fortress.
In one of the photos is the entrance from the "Porta Udine" and in the aqueduct, adjacent to the same gateway.
