Nice mountain bike ride, we were quite a few people, and we basically rode the top half of the Lago di Bolsena. The speed was very low as not everyone in the group had mountain bike experience and a few people where on their first bike ride....so there was a lot of waiting for them XDNonetheless awesome view as you ride with the lake on your side and beautiful hills on the other. Bolsena is a beautiful town worth visiting anyway, bike or no bike.
Good day out trip. If you are experienced on a bike you could actually ride all around the lake.The ideal bike for this is a XC bike with the most road type tyre you can get because part of the track involves some light off-roading but depending on your preferences you could just park in a different place and bypass the off road part completely....but doing that you miss the "Sentiero dei Briganti" which is an awesome stretch of track that runs alongside the lake (you are never more than 10 meters away from the water of the lake). We took the "Sentiero dei Briganti" on the return trip while when we went towards Bolsena we took the road around it instead (the road is called "strada provinciale di Bolsena")It's an easy ride, if you can go for 40Km on a bike you can definitely do this! It is mostly flat with short and unchallenging uphill sections for real beginners!Note that the bit from Grotte di Castro to Bolsena is on a really busy road and although it isn't really dangerous i wouldn't recommend parents to bring their kids here :-|If you go i suggest going in a summer morning as the sun could get really hot between 11am and 4pm. Remember to bring a swimming suit in your camelback since you might wanna go for a refreshing swim in the lake after the ride, trust me :-)Going during any other season is ok but not recommended since with no tourists the place is like a ghost town.
