Descrizione del percorso

My first attempt at bikepacking (with some learnings involved). The idea was to ride as much as possible these two marked trails in Eastern Finland, and link them with as little as possible tarmac riding and following of own tracks. Short sections of the trails were out of scope as they are within National Park limits (where cycling is prohibited). In the end I rode practically all of Susitaival, but had to take a tarmac shortcut limiting time spent on Taitajan taival. This was due to Learning_1 - thou shall not expect a (fairly) lightweight rear wheel's spokes to withstand the additional forces caused by extra 15 kilo backpack strapped on to a rather unwieldy rider (exacerbated by dry bag strapped to the bars) . Learning_2 would be to carry extra spokes. And Learning_3 to manage the weight distribution a bit better. Not to mention refraining from taking too much stuff.Nevertheless I did not want to call the cab right away, but decided to try to nurse the wheel on any rooty/rocky sections, and to shorten the last part of the trip. And luckily that worked out, and thus I got to ride (and push and carry) the mostly fine trails. There are some unridable or simply too hard (to me that is) sections, but also a lot of singletrack heaven. Some of the more memorable moments were the astonishing dam works of beavers, balancing on "boardwalk" and the fabulous end-of-the-day swim after a hot day at a perfect little sandy beach.
More info of the route and services along the way from the official hiking site of the region (main info in Finnish with brief in English).
