Per gran parte del 1500 la Fonte del Faggio fu al centro di un’aspra contesa, con centinaia di morti, tra Amandola e Montefortino, fino a quando il Legato della Marca cardinale Bandini, nel 1599, impose alle due comunità la pace assegnando la Fonte a Montefortino. L’importanza storica del luogo stride col penoso stato di abbandono e degrado odierno al quale contribuisce non da meno il Rifugio S.Giovanni Gualberto (della Forestale, ora in uso al WWF) adiacente alla Fonte, comunque già dissacrato da scellerate opere di “restauro” degli anni 50. E’questa una breve presentazione del luogo che abbiamo scelto per nominare il giro che andiamo ora a descrivere. Partendo da Pintura di Bolognola si sale con la carrozzabile per il Monte Berro, le pendici del Monte Amandola, la “Pescolla” fino alla testa della Val d’Ambro. Qui si svolta in decisa discesa a sinistra verso la sorgente, prendendo dietro ad una fonte il sentiero (n° 14 sulla carta dei sentieri, n° 226 sul terreno) che risale verso l’intaglio delle Roccacce (luogo dove sorgeva nel X secolo il castello del conte Mainardo di Siffredo, da cui il nome della cima “Castelmanardo”) al di là del quale si scende con ripidi tornanti fino ad una pista che, mantenendosi abbastanza in piano, alternando tratti di bosco con faggi secolari a zone scoperte e ghiaioni, porta alla Fonte del Faggio. Da qui la discesa ridiventa impegnativa per ripidi tornanti e ghiaioni fin sotto ai bastioni del Balzo Rosso da dove, tenendosi sempre a sinistra, si sale dai 1040 m. della radura delle “Macchie” ai 1185 m. del Rifugio Amandola. I 7 km di agevole carrareccia che ci separano da Pintura di Bolognola non dovrebbero far rinunciare ad un bel pranzetto al Rifugio che noi ovviamente non ci siamo fatti mancare.

From here the descent again becomes challenging for steep switchbacks and scree just below the ramparts of the Red Dodge where, keeping always to the left, climb from 1040 m. the clearing of the "spots" to 1185 m. Amandola of Refuge. The 7 km of easy track that separate us from Pintura Bolognola should not have to give up a nice lunch at the Refuge that we obviously we did not miss.
