Poche settimane fa il tramonto mi ha fatto desistere dal gettarmi nelle fauci della valle dell’Orfento, come coronamento di un bel tour per le vette della Majella… ma ad essere sincero questo trail merita di essere gustato a sé, visto il grande interesse naturalistico e ambientale che la Valle offre.
Lasciamo l’auto nei pressi del ponte all’entrata di Caramanico Terme 500 mslm, di fronte al distributore di carburante, e, tornati in dietro di poche centinaia di metri su asfalto, imbocchiamo il bivio per Decontra e Riga; saliamo fino al bel paesino di Decontra a 810 mslm e sul tornante lungo la strada maestra che entra nel paese, si trovano le indicazioni CAI che ci accompagneranno per la carrareccia che arriva fino al rif. Marcello di Marco.
Percorriamo la carrareccia per quasi tutta la sua lunghezza senza arrivare al rifugio, fino a quota 1600 circa, dove deviamo ad un quadrivio verso il bosco e Rava dell’Avellana. Gli scorci sulla sottostante valle dell’Orfento si fanno sempre più interessanti finché, arrivati ad un panoramico aggetto, divengono sublimi: paretoni di solido calcare, modellato dai millenari agenti atmosferici, sprofonda nella gola di vegetazione autunnale! quota 1700 mslm. Di fronte la vista aspra e severa del monte Cavallo e del Focalone che generano la parte alta della valle dell’Orfento, annientano le nostre misere esistenze! ;)
Qui inizia la discesa della Rava dell’Avellana che, con innumerevoli tornanti, ci condurrà nelle fauci dell’Orfento…. molto divertente e mai difficile, in veste autunnale molto suggestiva… occhio ai segni a volte poco evidenti per l’abbondante fogliame….
Più sotto al bivio si può scegliere se continuare all’interno della valle o salire ai ruderi dell’eremo di S. Onofrio: noi abbiamo scelto la seconda opzione: dell’eremo non rimane che solo un portale in pietra!
Da qui si scende ancora e il single track diviene molto flow e godereccio fino a raggiungere il letto del fiume; con qualche saliscendi si arriva ai tre ponti su rocce in ambiente molto suggestivo e “turistico domenicale”, ma sicuramente di effetto.
L’uscita dalla valle per riconquistare il ponte di Caramanico Terme si fa in portage per una 50 di metri di dislivello!

A few weeks ago the sunset made me desist from throwing myself into the jaws of the valley dell'Orfento, as the crowning of a nice tour to the peaks of Majella ... but to be honest this trail deserves to be enjoyed in itself, given the great interest in nature and environment that the Valley has to offer.
leave the car near the bridge at the entrance to Caramanico Terme 500 meters above sea level, opposite the petrol station, and, back in behind a few hundred meters of asphalt, we take the junction for Decontra and Riga; climb up to the beautiful village of Decontra at 810 meters above sea level and on the hairpin along the road that enters the country, there are signs that CAI will accompany us for the track that goes up to ref. Marcello Marco.
Walk along the cart road for almost its entire length without arriving at the shelter, to a height of about 1600, to a crossroads where we turn off to the woods and Rava dell'Avellana. The views of the valley below dell'Orfento become more and more interesting until, arrived at a panoramic projection, become sublime: paretoni of solid limestone, shaped by the millennial atmospheric agents, it sinks into the throat of autumn vegetation! altitude of 1700 meters above sea level. Faced with the harsh and severe view of Mount Cavallo and Focalone that generate the highest part of the valley dell'Orfento, destroy our lives miserable! ,)
Here begins the descent of Rava dell'Avellana that, with innumerable twists and turns, will lead us into the jaws ... dell'Orfento. very funny and never difficult, as autumnal very impressive ... eye to the signs sometimes very noticeable for its abundant foliage. ...
More below the junction, you can choose whether to continue within the valley or climb to the ruins of the hermitage of S. Onofrio: we have chosen the second option: the hermitage that remains is only a stone portal!
From here you descend again and the single track becomes much flow and pleasure until they reach the bed of the river; with some ups and downs you come to the three bridges over rocks in highly evocative and "tourist Sunday," but certainly effect.
The output from the valley to regain the bridge Caramanico Terme is done in portage for 50 yards height difference!
