Periplo del Monte Cofano con salita della vetta.
Il percorso si sviluppa intorno al promontorio di Monte Cofano (mt 659), bastione roccioso che si erge a strapiombo sul mare nel territorio del Comune di Custonaci (Trapani).
Il cammino procede per un tratto pianeggiante fiancheggiando un tratto di costa incontaminato, privo di insediamenti. Il sentiero attraversa un paesaggio rupestre inserito in un ambiente a macchia mediterranea (palma nana, cisto, erica) piuttosto rada ma ricca di specie endemiche. L’area, compresa all’interno della Riserva Naturale Orientata Monte Cofano gestita dall’Azienda Regionale Foreste Demaniali, offre vedute panoramiche di grande suggestione con vertiginose ascensioni di pareti rocciose che si specchiano nell’azzurro della distesa marina che circonda il promontorio.
Lungo il percorso si incontrano testimonianze e manufatti di epoche diverse a partire dalla preistoria.
Il primo in ordine è la torre saracena della tonnara di Cofano ,una caratteristica fortificazione spagnola dalle pareti costruite a semiarco in modo da resistere ai colpi delle palle di cannone.
Alla fine del percorso, si giunge alla torre saracena della tonnara di San Giovanni (XVI sec), poco a monte la grotta del Crocifisso è una caverna che si inoltra per qualche decina di metri all’interno della rupe e offriva riparo agli abitanti di epoca neolitica.
Sul terreno di calpestio della grotta sono ancora visibili resti di patelle ferruginee, un mollusco oggi estinto che faceva parte della dieta dei nostri antenati. La vicina cappella del Crocefisso, ancora oggi meta di pellegrinaggi primaverili di devoti custonacensi, insieme al bassorilievo di San Nicola di Bari intagliato nella roccia, sono manufatti espressione della religiosità popolare risalenti al XVIII sec.
Si parte dalla località Castelluzzo, si raggiunge la Baia di Santa Margherita, si percorre la carrareccia che conduce alla Tonnara del Cofano, quindi si continua seguendo il sentiero che a mezza costa taglia la base del Monte Cofano e si giunge all’abitato di Cornino, da qui si sale alla Sella di Monte Cofano e quindi ci si inerpica su di un sentiero all’inizio pedalabile che diventa man mano più erto fino a morire alla base di risalti rocciosi, seguendo dei bolli rossi su terreno ripido ( occhio!) si guadagna una cresta, si percorre quest’ultima fino ad un risalto roccioso verticale dal quale pende una corda, si supera il risalto ( molto esposto!) e si perviene ad un terreno più tranquillo, quindi si raggiunge la cima da dove si gode un panorama meraviglioso.
Dalla cima si ripercorre a ritroso l’itinerario di andata, giunti alla sella del Cofano ci si puo’ dirigere verso il “Baglio del Cofano” un’antico insediamento pastorale poi si ritorna alla sella e si prende il piacevole e tecnico sentiero che porta alle “ Scalette “, qui il percorso si fa ostico e molto trialistico, superate le svolte su gradini scavati nella roccia ci si ricongiunge all’itinerario di andata ed a questo punto ci si può regalare un tonificante bagno nelle acque cristalline della Baia di Santa Margherita.

Circumnavigation of Mount Hood with ascent of the summit.
The route runs around the headland of Mount Hood (659 mt), bastion of rock that rises above the sea in the municipality of Custonaci (Trapani).
path proceeds by a flat stretch alongside a pristine stretch of coastline, with no settlements. The path crosses a rocky landscape in an environment maquis (dwarf palm, cistus, heather) rather sparse but rich in endemic species. The area, including inside the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve managed by the Regional State Forests, offers panoramic views of great beauty with vertiginous climbs rock walls that are reflected in the blue expanse of the sea that surrounds the headland.
Along the way you will encounter testimonies and artifacts from different periods from prehistory. The first in order is the Saracen tower of the trap of Hood, a characteristic Spanish fortification walls built by the semiarch in order to withstand the blows of the balls cannon.
At the end of the path, we reach the Saracen tower of the trap of St. John (XVI century), just upstream of the Crucified cave is a cave that goes to a few tens of meters into the cliff and offered shelter to the inhabitants of the Neolithic era.
On the ground decking of the cave are still visible remains of limpets ferruginee, a now extinct mollusk that was part of the diet of our ancestors. The nearby chapel of the Crucifix, still today a place of pilgrimage for devotees custonacensi spring, along with the bas-relief of St. Nicholas of Bari carved into the rock, are an expression of popular religious artifacts dating back to the eighteenth century.
Castelluzzo part of the resort, you will reach the bay of Santa Margherita, take the track that leads to the tuna Hood, then continue following the path that cuts through the hillside base of Mount Hood and you reach the village of Cornino, from here you climb the Sella di Monte hood and then you climb on a path beginning to cycle that becomes progressively steeper until they die at the base of rocky overhangs, following the red marks on steep terrain (watch out!) earns a ridge, you take it up to a rocky prominence which hangs vertically from a rope, cross the ridge (very exposed!) and goes on to a more peaceful land, and then you reach the top where you can enjoy a wonderful panorama.
From the top, traces reverse the route forward, reached the saddle of the hood you can 'go towards the "Baglio del Hood" an ancient pastoral settlement then return to the saddle and take the pleasant and technical trail that leads to the "Ladders" here the trail becomes very difficult and Dedicated trials, past the turning on steps carved into the rock we went itinerary again and at this point we can give an invigorating swim in the clear waters of the Bay of Santa Margherita. | Guide Alpina and Master of MTB.
